Brew coffee directly into your Stanley Thermos
Design Objective
Design a coffee maker to meet the needs of a target Persona.
Garrett Butler is a landscape worker by trade that always has coffee to share.
He makes his coffee strong, with just a touch of sugar, and keeps it in a big abused Stanley thermos.
Persona
Garrett is a young, blue collar man, who grew up in the countryside of Auburn, Alabama. Garrett has been self reliant since he was 18 years of age, and he never shies away from hard work. He drives an old, well used, ford ranger. He loves his truck because, "it is paid off, and - broken in," so he doesn't have to worry about new scratches or dents. On the weekends he likes to hunt, fish, and camp.
Design Intent
Primary goal is to eliminate the coffee pot and brew directly into a 2 liter Stanley Thermos
Stanley has already laid the groundwork with with a rugged design, good material choices, and classic branding.

Initial design has potential but too many design flaws
Design Flaws

Screw on lid is time consuming and should be more integrated

A watertight seal is needed and will burn users if opened during operation

Internal tubing inaccessible and hard to clean

Percolator design using metal coffee grind basket which needs to cool before cleaning

Standard coffee filters would make cleaning more enjoyable
Due to shortcomings above, traditional filters
incorporated using drip method

Too top heavy and lid should be more integrated
Too tall to fit under kitchen cabinets and target consumer has small kitchen with little storage space

Opened lid extends arm to raise water spout so nested coffee basket can be accessed
Coffee basket designed to be used with standard coffee filters
Extended base centers the thermos, which is well insulated so hot plate is not needed

Materials Render
Digitally sketched render to finalize material choices that complement Stanley Thermos brand language
Personal technique used where render is intentionally transparent in key locations to create illusion of environment reflections. Changing background color will automatically create reflections of same color.
Improved functionality by moving flip lid tab to right side;
allowing user to open lid with right hand and
grab the grinds basket with left hand
New extended base has thicker, tapered profile for added rigidity and refined look
